The Culinary Union continues their fight against the Palms Casino Resort involving employees right to unionize. The group will be joined this Friday by the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance (APALA) during a picket against the casino, protesting the property as they have not recognized the union that was voted for by 7BALL employees.
Continued Support:
The Culinary Union has received continued support as they take on the casino operator. On top of the APALA, the group has been show support by other union organizations as well as candidates running for president of the United States.
Bernie Sanders spoke out on Twitter in support of the employees, stating that Trump supporting owners Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta need to stop ignoring the law and begin negotiating with their employees. The picket taking place this Friday will be the second time the Union has worked with another major group to picket the Palms.
Back in June, the UNITE HERE convention members, over 1,000 individuals, joined and marched along with the group on Flamingo Road in an effort to see the Palms work with their employees.
According to News3lv.com…
Monica Thammarath, the National President of the APALA commented on their support for the Culinary Union by stating: “As the nation’s largest labor organization for Asian American and Pacific Islander workers, it is especially meaningful for us to be here in support of the Culinary Union, a diverse union with 15 percent AAPI membership, and Nevada’s largest AAPI organization.”
Station Casinos:
The Palms is owned and operated by Station Casinos and the parent company will not budge when it comes to the union issue. Back in June, Red Rock Resorts senior VP, Michael Britt, stated that the company has the right to challenge a ruling by the National Labor Relations Board that stated the company failed and refused to bargain in good faith with employees. Red Rock Resorts is the parent company of Station Casinos.
Several casino properties in Nevada that are owned by Station Casinos have been trying to gain union status. The Fiesta Rancho Hotel and Casino is one such property that has tried for years to unionize. The Sunset Station Hotel and casino also voted to join the Culinary Workers Union.
Red Rock has 19 venues that are located in or near Las Vegas. They have been involved in several labor disputes that involves employees and such issues have led to picketing and strike threats.
